Skill Level: Beginner. If you can thread a needle, you can do this art form. Needle felting experience is a plus but not a prerequisite.

We will be making a broach/shawl pin using zippers, roving, and embellishments. The zipper is sewn by hand onto wool felt, making an outline of a design. The inside is then filled in with wool roving using the technique of needle felting. Then embellishments are added. Students will learn how to prepare a zipper and apply a pattern. Instruction on needle felting will be included in this class, as well as embellishment tips and finishing options. By the end of class students should have a completed broach/shawl pin.
The materials fee includes a how-to book, pattern, backing fabric, prepared zipper, needle and thread, wool roving, felting needles and felting foam, a variety of embellishments, and a pin back.
Participants need to provide sharp scissors.

Skill Level: Intermediate. Students should have prior experience executing rings and chains with picot joins in needle tatting.
This class complements the Beginning Needle Tatting class on Sunday, September 19, which introduces these techniques.
Using two needles, two colors, and beads makes your tatting POP! In this class, you will learn to execute rings and chains in contrasting colors each on its own needle, to float rings off a chain, and to add beads by two methods. The students will make a medallion. While some may complete the project in class, all will have the skills and knowledge to do so at home.
Participants will need to have 2 size-5 tatting needles, 2 balls of size-10 crochet thread in contrasting colors, a small package of size-8/0 beads, and a tiny crochet hook (size 12 or a size that will go through the hole in your bead and hook the thread). Students may wish to have scissors.

Learn to make striking color patterns in your knitting while working only one color per row. Mosaic knitting is incredibly popular right now, and with good reason. It is simple to learn, but once you’ve mastered the concept, the possibilities for play are limitless. We’ll cover mosaic knitting both flat and in the round, and talk about incorporating textural patterns, yarn management, and color planning. You will work on several different swatches and leave this class with the skills and inspiration to tackle any mosaic pattern or to design your own!
Participants should provide worsted-weight yarn in 2 contrasting colors, wound off into 2 balls of each color that are at least 20 yards long; both straight needles and double-pointed or two circular needles (for working a small circumference in the round) in an appropriate size (US 7–9); scissors; and stitch markers.
Homework: Before class begins, with darker color, cast 30 stitches on to your straight needles. Knit two rows in garter stitch (knit every row).

Skill Level: Intermediate. Students should be able to knit, purl, perform a stretchy cast-on such as the German twisted cast-on, and work in the round. It will be helpful but not required if students have knit a hat before.
Stranded colorwork can often seem complex or intimidating. The term ‘stranded colorwork’ refers to knitting that uses two colors at once, where both colors are carried behind the work as the stitches are knitted. This technique produces incredibly beautiful eye-catching garments, and knitting with two or more colors also tends to make these items quite a bit warmer than single-color items. Demystify stranded knitting and achieve colorwork success as you knit a hat with traditional Norwegian motifs. Learn how to follow a chart and pick up some helpful tips along the way. Students will learn to hold two colors of yarn, manage floats, determine color dominance, and read colorwork charts. By the end of the class, students should be able to complete the hat on their own.
Participants will need 2 contrasting colors of DK-weight yarn: 100 grams for the background and 50 grams for the foreground of the pattern; and appropriately sized needles for working in the round.

Students will be introduced via slides and a presentation to the Norwegian art of Skinnfell, in which designs are stamped onto leather and sewn into various objects such as mittens and headbands. In this class, because we cannot meet together, you will create a pair of heart-shaped ornaments made from sheepskin that has already been stamped with traditional designs. You will learn how to sew the sheepskin ornaments together.
The materials fee includes sheepskin, thread, and needles.

Ravelry is such a great resource with a lot of uses. Learn how to use Ravelry to search patterns and yarns, create projects, substitute yarns, catalogue your stash and needles, and more. You can join groups, find help, track your projects, and even find discontinued yarn or books! Learn everything you need to know in order to post your first project. The class will go over all the hidden "gems" that Ravelry has provided for its users, and then answer specific questions on how to do things.
Participants should have a laptop or wi-fi enabled tablet; a Ravelry account with ID and password; and a notebook and pen/pencil.
Homework: Sign up for Ravelry if you don’t already have an account. Make sure you remember or save your ID and password so you can log in during the class.

Mandala crochet is a colorful type of crochet that uses multiple stitches to create a 3D effect. Frequent color changes and stitches on top of other stitches (overlay crochet) create beautiful decorations that can be used for blankets, pillows, or anything else you might crochet. In addition to the mandala blocks, we will use overlay crochet to make a stained-glass block, in which black yarn is used to break up the colors and create the effect of a stained-glass window. Students will learn magic loop, front and back loop crochet, standing single or double, front post crochet, bobbles, and clusters, and will complete 3 blocks using different techniques.
Participants should provide 100 yards in each of 5 colors of yarn in the same weight (they can be scraps left over from previous projects); a crochet hook of appropriate size for the yarn chosen; lockable stitch markers (optional); scissors; and a darning needle.

Use your handspun yarn or yarn from your stash to make useful and beautiful coiled baskets using the traditional wrapping and sewing technique. In this class you will learn how to select materials and build a coiled basket in a round or oval shape. We will talk about alternatives such as adding a handle or lid. Students will learn how to select/repurpose materials to make into baskets, how to wrap and sew yarn around the core material, and how to shape the basket. If students put in some time outside class, they should be able to complete their basket.
Participants should prepare the following materials:
For the basket’s inner core:

(Dollar Tree often has a pretty good poly rope.)
The key is to get something that is about 1/4″ to 3/8″ in diameter, somewhat (but not excessively) stiff, and not too hairy or smelly. You want to be able to bend it into a tight spiral. It should have enough body to be able to hold its shape once it is sewn, but not be too hard to work with.
For the wrapping/sewing material:
At least 25 yards of worsted-weight yarn. This can be various colors, handspun, or odds and ends left over from previous projects. If what you want is too fine, consider using multiple strands held together.
Notions:
Tapestry needle (get a thick one, preferably metal); craft glue (such as Elmer’s; you will only need a tiny bit of this); scissors; and 1 or 2 clip-type clothespins (optional).

Wondering how to make those fancy horizontal braids you see on knitted sweaters, hats, and cowls? Let’s take the mystery out of the process and learn how to do two-color, left- and right-leaning Latvian braids as well as one-color horizontal Vikkel braids. A lesson on Cori’s two-color cast-on is also included in this hands-on skill-building class where participants can decide to start a Choose Your Own Path hat or a cowl.
Participants should have 2 colors of worsted-weight wool yarn (one light and one dark works best; 50 grams are sufficient, so scraps may be used), and 2 size 7–8 16" circular knitting needles.

Skill Level: Advanced beginner. Note that students need to be able to measure a warp and dress their loom and have a basic understanding of weaving.
Students in this class will learn the basics of weaving tartan patterns, how to read a color diagram for measuring the warp, different kinds of tartan patterns, and tips and tricks for handling the colors for both warping the loom and weaving the piece. The instructor will provide handouts with instructions for warping the loom and for weaving the sample as well as for additional resources. The class is broken into multiple sessions so students have time between class meetings to apply what they have learned. The class can be completed on either a rigid heddle or a 4-harness loom; students will weave a small sample approximately 12" x 24" on their own looms.
The first session will introduce tartans and give students what they need to warp their looms. The next session covers the basics of weaving their pieces and addresses any questions from the previous week. The third session wraps up by addressing any additional questions, with the option of a "show and tell" so students can see how the colors other students have chosen interact with their plaid patterns and what various color combinations look like. Students will learn the basic structure of plaid patterns; how to read color order diagrams and threading and treadling diagrams; tips on how to work with multiple colors in warping and weaving; and color interactions between warp and weft.
Students need to provide the following supplies: a rigid heddle or 4-harness loom, at least 13 inches wide; 1 shuttle appropriate to the loom (rigid heddle weavers might want 1 shuttle for each color in their sample; floor loom users need 1 bobbin for each color); a skein of worsted-weight yarn in each of 4 different colors; and a pencil and paper. A calculator will be helpful.

Did one of your knitting projects have a problem? Have you finished knitting a sweater shawl or sweater and don’t wear it? In this class, based on the popular HGTV show Fixer Upper, I’m here to bring your old, unused, projects back to life. Bring your projects to this class for a little help on fixes, tips, and tricks for such specific problems as necklines, button bands, and armhole depths. I’ve had my share of problem knits throughout my 30+ years of knitting, and I’ve come up with some unique and interesting fixes. Class participation will be required, as there really is no class if no one brings a problem. Please sign up only if you’re willing to bring a project. We will also crowd source solutions to your knitwear problems by letting knitters in the class offer suggestions for improving a garment’s wearability.
Students do not need to provide supplies, but should bring a problem knit or question.

This class complements the Stranded! A Tale of Two Colors class on Sunday, September 19, which introduces stranding techniques.
In this workshop we’ll explore the basics of designing fair isle and stranded knitting projects.
Students will learn how to incorporate stranded knitting into existing non-stranded patterns, how to adjust the colors in existing designs, and how to create their own stranded knitting patterns and motifs to fit a desired project. Students will spend time creating or modifying patterns using variations in color choices or adjustments in motifs. We’ll discuss how gauge and yarn types impact the process, how to center the pattern motifs, and how to ensure a good fit between the pattern motifs and the project. Students will come away with graphed patterns and swatches for exploring colors.
Participants should have graph paper, a pencil and eraser, colored pencils, a calculator, 5–7 balls of yarn of different colors in a similar weight, and needles of an appropriate size for the yarn and suitable for knitting in the round (double points, two circulars, or magic loop).

This class will present materials to help you design items like sweaters from scratch, as well as to modify existing patterns to suit a particular need. We will go over resources and techniques, and you will leave with a basic pattern for a project of your choice. While the focus will be on knitting, crocheters should find the class useful as well. No design or drawing skills are required. Note that if you choose a large garment like a sweater, the design might not be complete at the end of the class, but the important elements of it should be. Some basic math is involved, but don't let that scare you; your calculator will do all the hard stuff! Free resources are available on the internet and in books.
Participants must provide graph paper and regular note paper; colored pencils or pens; a calculator; and some ideas of what they would like to design (this could be anything from a wrist warmer to a dishcloth to a sweater).

During this class, students will learn the fun technique of adding multi-gauge stitches to their knitting. We'll cover the basics of creating knit stitches that are 2 and 3 times the size of normal stitches, and how to add this technique into a pre-existing pattern. We'll be using this technique on a simple set of fingerless mitts that students will prepare ahead of time as homework. By the end of class students should be binding off and will have a finished project to take home.
Participants should bring a crochet hook in a size similar to the needles used; locking stitch markers; scissors; notepad and pen; and completed homework.
Homework: Come to class with at least one complete mitt with the stitches live on the needles OR a 6-inch swatch in stockinette with the stitches live on the needles. I will be providing copies of the Gaugetastic Mitts pattern to all students. These will be sent in time for you to prepare at least one mitt before class.

Introduce some whimsy into your knitting by playing with elongated stitches. In this class, we’ll explore several fun new stitch patterns including multi-row elongated straight and sloped stitches, “dip” stitches, passed-over elongated stitches, and the Indian cross stitch. We’ll see how stacking and alternating these stitches takes our knitting in new and inspiring directions. Students will work a swatch using these various techniques.
Participants should provide about 30 yards of worsted-weight yarn and compatible-sized needles (US 7–9) for working flat.
Homework: In advance of class, please cast on 30 stitches and work four rows of garter stitch, working flat (back and forth).

If you have tried tatting and struggled to pass the shuttle between your fingers while keeping your stitches neat, needle tatting is the answer! If you have always admired tatted pieces, but thought you could never do it yourself, needle tatting is for you! If you are looking for a new medium to expand your fiber horizons, needle tatting will do it! Anyone who knits or crochets can usually learn needle tatting! Tatting is an inexpensive art that takes very few tools and materials, but satisfies the desire to create something beautiful to share with the world. In this class, you will learn the basics of needle tatting and use these techniques to make a beautiful pendant; while some students will complete their pendant in class, all will have the skills and knowledge to do so at home. Everyone is welcome regardless of experience, but the class is designed for the absolute beginner. Students will learn to make the double stitch and picot, as well as how to join picots and connect a series of stitches into rings and chains.
Participants should provide a size-5 tatting needle and a ball of light-colored size-10 crochet thread.

This is a great beginning sock knitting course if you've never knit socks, but even experienced sock knitters will learn new tips and techniques along the way. We'll be making a single sock (this is not a two-at-a-time class) using fingering-weight yarn, but the pattern gives 12 sock sizes for babies through XXL adults so you can pick the size you would like to make in class. This stockinette sock features contrast heels, toes, and cuffs; a standard wedge toe; a short-row heel; and an Icelandic bind-off. By the end of class students will have a finished sock and all the skills to cast on for a second sock right away!

During this class, students will learn the basic brioche rib stitch, how to knit brioche using 1 or 2 colors, how to bind off, and how to read their knitting. Students will be given a pattern for the Giant Color Shift Brioche Scarf at no charge, but in class we will be making a smaller sample piece so that all the techniques for the scarf will be covered in the time allotted. By the end of class, students will have the necessary skills to complete the scarf on their own.
For the in-class sample piece, participants should bring 50 yards each of at least 2 colors of worsted-weight yarn (this can be scrap yarn); and circular knitting needles 1–2 sizes smaller than you would normally use for knitting stockinette on worsted-weight yarn; note that straight needles will not work. (If you are a tight knitter, go down 1 size; if you knit more loosely, go down 2 sizes.)
The Giant Color Shift Brioche Scarf requires size 7 (4.5 mm) 16" circular knitting needles; and 3 balls of Knitpicks City Tweed HW in 3 different colors OR about 165 yards each of 3 colors of any aran/heavy-worsted-weight yarn.
