Turn 2 pounds of raw fleece into a soft and cushy “sheepskin” seat pad or small rug by wet felting the back. Also known as humane sheepskin, or living pelts, the beauty of this process is that the sheep is still alive and growing more fleece. Felted fleeces are completely hand washable. The techniques learned in this class can be applied at home later on a full fleece. Students will have the opportunity to personalize their work by adding pre-felt motifs to the back of their project.

Please note: this is a six-hour class, with an hour break from noon to 1 pm.

Supplies to bring and homework

  • About 2 pounds of shorn fleece (unwashed) with a staple length of at least 3 inches (the fleece can be loose locks or hanging together as on the sheep, but not already felted) Students will have the option to purchase fleece from the instructor for $10/lb.

  • An old bath towel

  • A plastic bag to take home wet items

  • Becky Utecht

    Becky Utecht raises sheep and makes art in rural Ogilvie, MN. She is passionate about fiber arts (Skinnfell, felting, spinning, knitting, weaving) and promoting humane, sustainable sheep and wool production in the U.S. She has taught hundreds of students the magic of felting and Scandinavian Skinnfell in classes held regionally and nationally. She studied with renowned feltmakers over the years and she continues to learn and exchange ideas. As an American Scandinavian Foundation Folk Arts fellow, she studied advanced Skinnfell techniques in Norway in 2025.
